The Things We Never Say
Small syllables,
like drops
that fall unbidden
unannounced
in conversation.
Important? Who can say?
Who marks their passage
Or notes the worth
Of a single word,
Or phrase,
that one spoken statement
of praise,
or acknowledgement
of fact,
that would turn one’s steps
towards
a brighter way.
Unsaid;
that hollow space
fills with regrets,
with empty threats.
Unspoken still
A promise unfulfilled
