Apparently there is a television series called Terra Nova. Nope. This isn't a story about that.

Wish I had some to drink in fact. I have been posting 'Vodka' here today.. well, trying to post it, but the formatting has a mind of its own at the moment So it will be a slow process. Anyway, the first part is up, although more of it is on the Herald. Finished a drawing as well yesterday; the first portrait I have done for a while, but that won't be published for a couple of months now.
Vodka. Warning: Contains - violence, blood, imminent death, oh... and err.... vodka. I am SO going to be in trouble when someone decides to visit me again. Found a competition in a newspaper a couple of weeks ago. Write a flash fiction story, any subject, in exactly 165 words.
Set me thinking. Why 165 words? 100 is the length for a 'drabble' although although some writers call any very short piece of writing a drabble, and 'flash fiction' usually refers to a story between 300 and 1000 words. Anyway. 165 words. (Including the title) Any subject. Sounds easy doesn't it! Sooo.. errrrr... And after a week of thinking about it I am still no nearer getting an idea! I don't want to do a trite 'twist in the tail' story, and to be honest, angst doesn't lend itself to very short accounts. The drabble for the UFO episode 'Identified' was relatively simple as I had specified that the drabbles had to be about what happened after the end credits, and I already have several others written for further episodes! Something will come to mind! ( I hope!) Regarding other writing, I am trying to get to grips with all the unfinished stuff that has been vying for my attention. Not done any art work for a long time either. Everything seems to be in abeyance somehow, but once I have the one thing that is holding me back from writing, then I can crack on! I have been reading a book in the holidays that has made me re-assess my thoughts on whether my stories are too violent. It’s a huge epic story with multiple deaths in some pretty horrific ways, and the author doesn’t spare any of the characters that are developed over the course of the story. I am left wondering whether it has been done simply to shock the reader, to make them realize that authors have the power of life and death over their characters. If so, it is a shame that some writers feel so little respect for readers, that they give us intricate and beautiful insights into people only to dispose of them with almost callous disregard. It wasn’t as if it was a necessary part of the plot.(And the dog died as well!)
But, it did make me realize that my stories are not as violent as perhaps I think they are. After all, UFO was a fairly brutal series. Two deaths in the opening scene and plenty of sinister moments in later episodes. John Croxley, Craig Collins, Beaver James, Regan to name a few. A long list, and we shouldn’t forget the husband in ‘The Square Triangle’ whose death was sanctioned by Straker. A particularly dark event but one that fitted the overall theme of the series. I am currently writing several stories, one of which is about as violent as I am likely to write. It might never see the light of day, simply because it IS so dark, so grim and unrelenting in its theme, but I am going to continue with it. It should form the basis for a much longer story, which will include a look at the aliens and their world. At the moment though, it’s about 7k long and in its infancy, and I have plenty of other stories to work on when I don’t feel like writing unrestrained violence and angst! I found these quotes on a site. I don’t think whoever said them will mind me putting them here. They sum up my current feelings perfectly. If you write with enough confidence and assurance you will be allowed to write whatever you like. Write the story you want to write, as it needs to be written, as you want to write it. Write it honestly, and with love, and do the best you can. Write with enjoyment, for yourself. I finally got round to editing this story properly. I have been trying to get the font right for far too long so yesterday I took it down and reposted. A simple enough task one might think. But no. The whole thing needed re-formatting line by line. Sigh.
I did it anyway, and it gave me the chance to tidy it up and remove parts that were ..... irritating me. So, that is Process and Valentine's done. Surrendered is taking longer than I thought, but there is no rush. And I have added a new picture: Module to Moonbase. I started work on a story about two years ago, called Combined Operations. With one thing and another it never got further than 15K in length and I had doubts that I would ever finish it. Certainly, once I started Glitch in the Machine, and the Moonlight and Vodka trilogy, and then moved onto Shepherd, all thoughts of earlier stories in the Rachel Chronicles disappeared. But, for the last couple of days I have been fertling with it, trying to use the basic plotline with Dimitri Leonov.
It hasnt worked. Dimitri isn't the right character for this story, so I am going back to the original idea and writing it with the person that it was meant to have. Rachel Philips. It's been a long time simce I thought about her and Straker, although I did write Rules and Regulations. There will have to be major changes in the theme of this story, as I originally intended the two of them to get married at the very end, but in fact it will be more realistic. They would never have been able to marry within the boundaries of military rules and regulations, and it would have been too twee anyway. I think Straker is more ... hardened now. More aware of the dangers and the distractions. More aware that he is not a perfect husband, that he cannot be a perfect husband, that he has already sacrificed a marriage and a son to SHADO, as well as his own happiness. So it is highly unlikely that he would go down that route again. Unless Earth was safe and he was no longer SHADO Commander. Maybe then. Maybe. So.. I will reopen the Combined Operations folder and start work. A lot of re-writing to do, a lot of rethinking. And I will HAVE to do anothe Dimitri story at some point! Maybe... Pittencriel. Damn... and there are so many plot bunnies in my brain at the moment. Sigh. New month. New start. I am shutting this site down from today, April 1st, and all my stories will be deleted. I will be concentrating in future on a different fandom. Possibly 'Triangle' or maybe even 'Postman Pat.'
Although, it is tempting to start writing the adventures of Hugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb. (Camberwick Green fans... watch out. Here I come!) snigger. snerk. no chance. sorry. sticking with UFO Oh my. The plot bunnies that are now bouncing merrily around my head!!! |
